On September 1, 2023, the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC and the Swedish Embassy in China jointly held a training session on the "Guidelines for Social and Environmental Responsibility Management of Chinese Textile and Clothing Enterprises" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guidelines") in Shanghai. This is the third special training session on the Guidelines held by the Office for Social Responsibility  of CNTAC since its release in 2022 and also the first offline training activity conducted.

In November 2022, the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC officially launched the "Guidelines for Social and Environmental Responsibility Management of Chinese Textile and Clothing Enterprises" as a practical tool to promote the localization application of social and environmental responsibility management in the Chinese textile and clothing industry and help Chinese textile and clothing enterprises build more resilient, responsible, and sustainable supply chains. After the "Guidelines" launch, the Social Responsibility Office collaborated with the Swedish Embassy and the Cotton Spinning Industry Association to organize two online training sessions for Swedish brands, their Chinese suppliers, and Chinese cotton textile industry enterprises. The content of the "Guidelines" was detailed and received widespread attention from both inside and outside the industry.

The first offline training held in Shanghai was comprehensively and deeply interpreted by senior industry experts. Combined with a large number of business cases in the industry, it presented the concept of responsible management and the methods and strategies of the Guide in a comprehensive and three-dimensional manner. Over 50 representatives from domestic and foreign brand companies, such as H&M, PUMA, Inditex, Lindex, Ikea, Li&Feng, Primark, and their supplier enterprises, participated in this training.

Ms. Zheng Jian, International Project Director of the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC, hosted the training. At the opening session, Ms. Linn Engvall, Director of the Corporate Social Responsibility Center of the Swedish Embassy in China (Second Secretary for Sustainable Business), delivered a speech at the training. She stated that to promote the sustainable development of enterprises in the global value chain, the Social Responsibility Center of the Swedish Embassy and the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC have established long-term cooperation and supported the Office of the China Textile Federation in developing the Guidelines. She believes that the promoting the Guidelines will provide stronger support and assistance for responsible business behavior in supply chain enterprises.

Subsequently, Dr. Liang Xiaohui, Chief Researcher of the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC, gave a detailed introduction to the origin, development, and legislative trends of responsible management in Europe, America, and the international community to the attending guests and representatives, titled "Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility Management: Why?". Through a large number of vivid cases and easy-to-understand interpretations, enterprises have realized the necessity and urgency of carrying out responsible management to make reasonable global decisions and manage risk.

In the "Guidelines for Responsible Management of Employee Issues" section, Ms. Zhang Juan, a specially invited trainer from the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC, focused on the "people-oriented" topic and introduced the evolution and characteristics of rules related to responsible management and labor rights. By implementating of the "six-step method", she detailed the analysis of the thirteen issues pertaining to labor responsibility in the Guidelines.

The detailed explanation of the "Guidelines" - "Corporate Governance and Business Ethics" section was explained by Ms. Wang Jing, a researcher in charge of the China Textile Federation, who emphasized that anti-corruption is an integral part of corporate governance. From the necessity of focusing on corporate governance to the characteristics that good corporate governance should possess, a comprehensive exposition was provided on the relationship between anti-corruption and corporate governance, as well as the application methods and strategies for preventing commercial bribery and corruption.

Ms. Han Yongjing, a specially invited trainer from the Office for Social Responsibility of CNTAC, provided a detailed interpretation and guidance on the "Responsible Management of Environmental Issues" section of the Guidelines, focusing on multiple sub-topics such as pollution, climate change, energy conservation and emission reduction, and biodiversity. She explained the methods of topic management one by one and pointed out the key and difficult points in the application management process for enterprises based on business experience.

Finally, Ms. Linn Engvall summarized the training session. She pointed out that carrying out responsible management can help Chinese textile and clothing enterprises better identify potential negative impacts on the environment and society during commercial operations, which has strong practical guidance significance for enterprises. She hopes to continue to cooperate with the China Textile Federation in the future to provide strong support for the sustainable development of the supply chain.
